Microbially Contaminated Industrial Media: A Health Risk for Human and Environment

Microbially contaminated industrial media such as drinking or process water pose a serious threat to humans and environment. Timely identification of such contaminations is therefore necessary to be able to initiate appropriate countermeasures.

Traditionally established detection methods that require central laboratories are often time-consuming and therefore unsuitable for time-critical analyses. For this reason, there is a growing need in many industrial sectors for decentralized solutions to detect microbial contamination. These sectors include the water industry, the food and beverage industry, the agriculture industry, the pharmaceutical industry, the cosmetics industry, the paint and coating industry, the fuel and lubricant industry, the algae and fish farming industry, the bioreactor and bioprocess industry, as well as the defense and biosecurity sector.

An ideal solution for the decentralized detection of microbial contamination should not only be fully automated and deliver results in as short a time as possible but also have a high specificity and at the same time be cost-effective.

In addition, for many such industrial applications, only living organisms are relevant for the analysis result. To be able to detect specifically, a living and dead microorganism differentiation module can be integrated into the system. An IMM proprietary method is used for this purpose, which can be flexibly adapted to various microorganisms.

The Fraunhofer IMM's own InBaDtec platform meets the requirements mentioned above. Designed as a modular system, it consists of an ultra-fast qPCR (quantitative polymerase chain reaction) detection module as well as individually combinable modules that can represent various steps of pre-treatment in miniature form. Both the individual modules and the resulting overall system can be flexibly adapted to the specific requirements of the user. The result is an automated Point-of-Use (PoU) device that enables complete analytics in less than an hour - from the sample to the result.
