About

The Hydrogen Online Workshop 2023 is a interactive workshop platform to discuss the most important issues of the hydrogen industry, as hydrogen is considered to be an important energy carrier of the future.

At Hydrogen Online Workshop 2023 we present our hydrogen technology solutions. These include our reformer systems for mobile hydrogen-based energy supply for maritime applications and land vehicles as well as power-to-gas processes such as methanization in compact microstructured reactors.

IMM workshop "How to process ammonia as hydrogen carrier for energy generation"

March 23, 2023 | 11:25 a.m. - 12:55 p.m. CET

Could renewable ammonia be a solution to transport and store hydrogen before it can be widely used as a future energy carrier?

Fraunhofer IMM is developing hydrogen generation systems applying ammonia as hydrogen carrier. While fuel cell applications require purification of the hydrogen and promise highest system efficiency, homogeneous combustion in burners or combustion engines is feasible with a mixture of ammonia, nitrogen and hydrogen. Both requires cracking of the ammonia, which is carried out with IMM self-developed catalyst technology.

Although ammonia is toxic in itself, it can be an alternative because ammonia is easier to store and transport than compressed hydrogen, and its transport in large quantities by land and sea is daily practice.

There are already established processes for the large-scale production of ammonia, which are very well controlled in terms of safety. In addition, ammonia has a much higher biological degradation compared to oil, which is important especially in maritime applications.

We divide our workshop into 3 sections: In the first section we provide an overview of IMM services and focus then on the motivation for applying ammonia as a hydrogen carrier, economical and safety issues and the future efficiency of an ammonia based value chain.

In the second part, we will give you an insight into our expertise in the catalyst technology we have developed and patented. We will present our portfolio of highly active and long-term stable, robust catalysts for the special application areas of fuel processing for fuel cells, catalytic combustion and ammonia cracking.

In the third section, we present system solutions for hydrogen supply from ammonia and go into detail about our reactor development services, in particular microreactors for energy related applications. Our development services include reactor design and construction for specific applications and process design and system development. Through two decades of research, IMM has successfully developed reactors of increasing power equivalent for fuel processing for a variety of fuels and, more recently, for ammonia cracking.
